Dry Eye in Adults

When 'Just Use Eye Drops' Isn't Enough

Your eyes feel constantly gritty, burning, and tired. You’ve tried every brand of artificial tears on the shelf, but the relief is temporary, and the frustration is constant. This is because most over-the-counter drops only mask the symptoms. At Brain Vision Institute, we go beyond the mask. We diagnose and treat the root cause of your Dry Eye Disease, offering advanced, medical-grade solutions that provide lasting relief.

of dry eye cases are caused by poor tear quality, not a lack of tears — a condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

The Chronic Discomfort That Derails Your Day

Dry Eye Disease is not a minor inconvenience; it is a chronic medical condition that can significantly impact your productivity, comfort, and quality of life. The constant battle with burning, stinging, and fluctuating vision is exhausting and can make even simple tasks feel like a struggle.

Does this sound familiar?

  • “My eyes are red, irritated, and feel like they have sand in them.”
  • “I can’t wear my contact lenses for more than a few hours without discomfort.”
  • “My vision gets blurry after reading or working on the computer for a while.”
  • “I’m sensitive to light, wind, and air conditioning.”
  • “I’ve tried countless eye drops, but nothing seems to provide lasting relief.”

If you are tired of a life dictated by the availability of your eye drops, it’s time to seek a real medical solution.

Beyond a Lack of Tears: The Real Cause of Dry Eye

For over 85% of people with dry eye, the problem isn’t a lack of tears; it’s the poor quality of their tears. This is a condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

Understanding MGD:

The Meibomian Glands:

Tiny oil glands lining your upper and lower eyelids that produce the essential oil layer of your tear film.

The Protective Oil Layer:

This oil layer coats the surface of your tears, preventing them from evaporating too quickly.

The Dysfunction:

In MGD, these glands become clogged with thick, unhealthy oil — due to age, hormonal changes, and, most significantly, reduced blinking from prolonged screen time.

The Result:

Without the protective oil layer, your tears evaporate rapidly, leaving the surface of your eye exposed, inflamed, and damaged — known as Evaporative Dry Eye.

Simply adding more artificial tears without addressing the underlying gland dysfunction is like trying to fill a leaky bucket. For true relief, you must treat the glands themselves.

Restoring Your Glands, Restoring Your Comfort

We are a certified Dry Eye Center of Excellence. Our approach is to use advanced diagnostic technology to identify the root cause of your dry eye and then use medical-grade treatments to restore the natural function of your tear system.

Depending on your diagnosis, your personalized plan may include:

  • LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation: This FDA-approved, in-office treatment is the gold standard for MGD. It gently heats and massages the inner and outer eyelids to liquefy and remove the blockages in your meibomian glands, restoring the natural flow of healthy oils.
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy: IPL uses specific wavelengths of light to reduce inflammation around the eyes, close off abnormal blood vessels that contribute to inflammation, and improve meibomian gland function.
  • Nutritional Intervention: We provide guidance on incorporating Omega-3 fatty acids and other anti-inflammatory nutrients into your diet to improve tear quality from the inside out.

The Advanced Dry Eye Assessment

1

We go far beyond a standard eye exam, using technology like LipiScan® to directly image your meibomian glands and assess their structure and function — analyzing your tear film quality and quantity to determine the exact cause of your dry eye.

Your Personalized Treatment Plan

2

Based on your diagnosis, we create a multi-faceted treatment plan combining LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy, and nutritional intervention.

Long-Term Management and Prevention

3

We provide you with a long-term management plan to keep your glands healthy and your symptoms at bay — including prescription eye drops, at-home hygiene practices, and periodic maintenance treatments to ensure lasting comfort.

Life Beyond the Eye Drop Bottle

Your Questions, Answered

Not at all. Patients describe it as a gentle, warming massage of the eyelids. The entire procedure takes about 12 minutes for both eyes and is performed in our office.

For LipiFlow, most patients experience significant relief after a single treatment, with results lasting from one to three years. For IPL, a series of 3-4 treatments is typically recommended for optimal results.

While the diagnostic portion of the evaluation is often covered, many advanced treatments like LipiFlow and IPL are considered elective procedures and may not be covered by all insurance plans. We offer financing options to make these treatments accessible.

Over-the-counter artificial tears only provide temporary, symptomatic relief. They do not treat the underlying cause of the problem — the dysfunction of your meibomian glands. By only using drops, you allow the condition to progress, which can lead to chronic inflammation and long-term damage to the ocular surface.
